WENDY DAGWORTHY
Known for her relaxed tailoring, oversized silhouettes and instinctive approach to layering, Wendy Dagworthy became one of the defining voices of British fashion during the 1970s and 1980s. After studying at Hornsey College of Art, she launched her own label in 1972, quickly gaining recognition for clothes that balanced practicality with an unmistakably artistic sensibility. Her designs, often crafted in textured natural fibres such as wool and mohair, were celebrated for their loose, unstructured shapes, bold colour combinations and subtle references to workwear and menswear.
Dagworthy’s pieces were stocked internationally and worn by musicians, creatives and fashion insiders throughout the decade, while signature styles such as oversized coats, wide cropped jackets and softly tailored separates became synonymous with a distinctly intelligent, wearable form of London fashion. She was also one of the founding figures behind London Designer Collections, the precursor to London Fashion Week, helping establish the capital as a global centre for independent fashion design.
Alongside contemporaries such as Betty Jackson, Katharine Hamnett and BodyMap, Wendy Dagworthy helped shape the creative renaissance of British fashion in the 1980s. Following the closure of her label in 1988, she became one of the most influential fashion educators in the UK, mentoring generations of designers at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, including Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Erdem Moralıoğlu.
