An elegant example of mid-century British craftsmanship, this vintage floral tapestry handbag was created using a beautifully worked needlepoint panel and retains its original matching coin purse.
The interior label for The Needlewoman Shop, 146–148 Regent Street, London W1, adds a wonderful piece of provenance. Established in 1928, The Needlewoman Shop became one of Britain’s most celebrated destinations for embroidery, tapestry kits and needlecraft supplies, inspiring generations of stitchers from around the world before closing in 1985.
Whether purchased as a finished bag or lovingly stitched from one of the shop’s renowned tapestry kits, it is a lovely surviving example of that tradition.
The front is decorated with a beautifully balanced bouquet of softly coloured blooms against a rich black background. The floral design feels timeless rather than overtly nostalgic, giving the bag an understated elegance that works just as well today as it would have done in the 1950s. The reverse is finished in classic black grosgrain fabric, while inside you’ll find the original coordinating purse, making this an increasingly uncommon complete set.
It’s exactly the sort of vintage accessory that slips effortlessly into a modern wardrobe. Equally at home with tailored separates, denim or a simple black dress, it brings texture and craftsmanship without ever feeling overly feminine or whimsical.
The bag remains in excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of age, testament to how well it has been cared for over the decades.
