Soft tan suede, generous proportions and a wonderfully draped shawl collar give this 1980s Maxfield Parrish jacket its effortless appeal. The dropped shoulders and wide sleeves create a relaxed silhouette, while three brown buttons fasten the front. Two deep, softly slouching patch pockets are a particularly lovely detail, echoing the easy folds of the suede.
Founded in 1972 by British designer Nigel Preston, Maxfield Parrish grew from its Chelsea beginnings, including a shop just off the King’s Road, into an internationally recognised label. Preston was celebrated for his innovative approach to leather, suede and sheepskin, working with supple skins to achieve the fluidity usually associated with cloth. His standing was recognised in 1982 when Grace Coddington selected a Maxfield Parrish ensemble for Fashion Museum Bath’s Dress of the Year collection.
This jacket captures that approach perfectly: understated, tactile and full of character, with its interest coming from the material and the way it falls around the body. Wear it loose over jeans and a fine knit, or with wide trousers for an elegant play on proportion. A special piece of British designer vintage with plenty of everyday wearability.
