Edwardian Velvet Evening Bag with Glass Bead Embellishment

Some accessories don’t simply complement an outfit – they become the focal point. This extraordinary Edwardian evening bag is one of them.

Dating from the early twentieth century, likely the Edwardian period or the very early 1920s, it is crafted from sumptuous black velvet and lavishly decorated with intricate glass beadwork in rich jewel tones. Metallic bronze bugle beads, delicate seed beads, faceted glass stones and stylised floral motifs come together in a wonderfully symmetrical design that feels unmistakably of its era while remaining strikingly modern.

The unusual envelope-style flap fastens with an ornate beaded button and loop closure, opening to reveal a softly lustrous cream satin lining. The elegant elongated silhouette makes it a beautifully distinctive evening bag, while the velvet strap allows it to be carried comfortably in the hand or on the wrist.

Remarkably well preserved for a piece over a century old, the beadwork remains largely intact with only a handful of missing beads, none of which detract from its overall impact. There is gentle wear to the velvet handle and light age-related wear to the satin lining, entirely consistent with its age.

Rather than saving it for costume occasions, this is exactly the sort of historic accessory that brings contemporary tailoring to life. Imagine it with a black tuxedo jacket, white vest, slim dark denim and heels, or carried alongside a simple black silk dress. Its rich textures and jewel-like detailing elevate even the simplest outfit.

A rare and wonderfully wearable example of early twentieth-century craftsmanship that proves exceptional vintage accessories never go out of style.
