Early 20th Century E.Gauthier Paris Red Velvet Evening Bag

A remarkable survivor from the early decades of the 20th century, this exquisitely crafted evening bag was made by the renowned Parisian maker E. Gauthier, whose luxury handbags were supplied to fashionable women during the Belle Époque.

Dating to around 1910–1920, the bag is fashioned from rich ruby red cotton velvet and is crowned with an extraordinary gilt metal frame. Every element of the ornate floral mount has been individually hand-etched before being set with sparkling paste stones, all of which remain beautifully intact. The elaborate floral clasp is both decorative and fully functional, closing securely with a satisfying click.

The interior is just as impressive. It retains its original woven silk lining and is stamped ‘Made in France’ alongside the maker’s mark, E. Gauthier, 97 Rue des Petits Champs, Paris, confirming its French manufacture and adding to its collectability.

Pieces by E. Gauthier are increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples retaining their original frame, lining and complete paste decoration. While this handbag shows the gentle signs of wear one would expect from an object well over a century old, these only add to its authenticity and tell the story of a piece that has been treasured through generations.

Whether displayed as a decorative object or carried for the most special of occasions, this is a rare example of early French craftsmanship that feels every bit as captivating today as it would have over one hundred years ago.
