Early 1980s Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Burgundy Tweed Jacket

I love the boxy cut of this Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche jacket. It falls straight from the shoulders, with broad notched lapels and two generous patch pockets at the hips. From a distance, the tweed reads as deep burgundy. Up close, you can see the little flecks of raspberry red against the dark navy weave.

The sleeves are just shy of full length, which leaves room for a statement bracelet to peek out beneath the cuff. I’d wear it open over a pale blue chambray shirt with wide-leg jeans for autumn. It’s the sort of practical, elegant tailoring that draws me to vintage Saint Laurent in the first place.

Details

  • Saint Laurent Rive Gauche label, made in France
  • Tweed outer, believed to be 100% wool. The composition label is missing.
  • Fully lined in a muted plum shade
  • Single-breasted with two dark buttons, two hip patch pockets and a welt pocket at the chest
  • Labelled EU 34 and photographed on a UK 8 mannequin. I think it could also suit a UK 10 for a closer fit.
