This extraordinary customised Levi’s denim jacket (now waistcoat) is less a garment and more a wearable work of art.
Beginning life as a classic Made in USA Levi’s denim jacket, it was transformed during the 1980s by a single owner into an intensely personal collage of textiles, embroidery, beadwork and treasured objects gathered over many years. Every embellishment tells a story. Every stitch feels intentional. It has the quiet confidence and artistry of couture, yet all of its beauty comes from a life genuinely lived.
The jacket is layered with an eclectic collection of embroidered appliqués, antique-style trims, studs, beadwork and decorative textiles sourced from around the world. Some elements appear considerably older than the jacket itself, suggesting they were carefully collected before being lovingly incorporated into the design. A permanently attached decorative brooch forms part of the composition, adding another richly textured focal point alongside intricate embroidered birds, insects, florals and richly coloured ornamental details.
The reverse is equally breathtaking, centred around a spectacular embroidered textile panel depicting a stylised bird amongst flowers. While it evokes traditional folk and Indigenous textile traditions, its exact cultural origin cannot be confidently identified, making it all the more intriguing. Rather than attempting to define it, we prefer to celebrate the craftsmanship and artistry it brings to the piece.
